Design Styles · No. 07
Bauhaus: the apartment was the point.
Tubular steel, primary discipline, and furniture born from a single question — how should a modern person live in a small urban dwelling? The only style in the archive invented explicitly for your problem.
The Bauhaus existed for fourteen years and reset domestic design permanently. Its program was the Existenzminimum — the dignified minimum dwelling: every object justified, every centimeter planned, beauty arising from function rather than applied to it. A 600 sq ft apartment is not beneath this style; it is its thesis.

Where this style comes from
Founded by Gropius in 1919, the school fused craft and industry: Breuer's tubular-steel chairs, Brandt's lamps, and the Dessau masters' houses produced the first furniture designed for serial production and small modern flats — the 1927 Weissenhof apartments are its full-scale manifesto.
The Dessau building's glass curtain wall, Weissenhof's worker housing, and the Frankfurt kitchen — the laboratory tradition of the small, exact dwelling.
- Form follows function — and admits itStructure is visible, never disguised.
- The minimum dwellingSmall plans treated as a design discipline, not a compromise.
- Industrial materials, domestic warmthSteel and canvas made livable through proportion.
[{"error":"Bauhaus is cold.","body":"Chrome photographed badly in the 1990s and the reputation stuck. In person, saddle leather, canvas, and wool warm steel exactly as the masters intended — the coldness is a missing-textile error, not a style property."},{"error":"It's a primary-colors look.","body":"Painting the Kandinsky poster onto a sofa misses the point. The school's interiors were largely white, grey, and material-toned; primaries appear once, as punctuation. One red object. Not a red room."},{"error":"Minimum means austere living.","body":"The minimum dwelling was about generosity through planning — more usable life per square foot, not less life. Austerity is what happens without the plan."}]
